Autumn Equinox

Alban Elfred, Autumnal Equinox, also known as The Harvest Festival, approx. 21st September.

As in the Spring Equinox, day and night will be equal. This is a double-sided festival, a time to give thanks for the harvest and to clear away the chaff and rubbish, both physically and metaphysically.

Cavemen painted the double helix (spiral) on their cave walls, today this has become a world wide symbol for reincarnation, and also incidently the shape of DNA. This symbol is very poignant at this festival, as death is followed by rebirth, so the double helix represents us winding in towards the darkest night of the Winter Solstice and a returning to a rebirth at the Spring Equinox.

The Goddess has produced all things in abundance and the God is Lord of the Harvest. Together they have created all that we have on earth, so we may be sustained through winter from the harvest produced, whilst retaining the seeds that will be planted in the spring, carrying on the unbroken cycle of life.
