Lammas

Lughnasadh, also known as Lammas or Loaf Mass. 31st July/1st August.

Lughnasadh is Celtic, meaning mourning of Lugh. Lugh is an ancient name for the Sun God. Summer has almost passed and we mourn the "death" of the Sun. This is both a wake and a celebration. The Sun's powers have "gone into the corn". Hence we celebrate the beginning of the harvest. The corn will be cut down and re-born as "the Bread of Life".

The Goddess is now giving birth, at the same time the Sun God's strength wanes and dies, to be re-born. We celebrate the life energy that the God has given, as well as the creation the Goddess is bringing forth.
